Smart Thermostat (SmartStat)
South River EMC has a program for members who are getting greater control over energy use with a Nest or ecobee (ecobee3, smart si, smart) thermostat.
You can now maximize the use of your Nest or ecobee smart thermostat, get a credit from the cooperative AND help South River EMC to save money on the hottest and coldest days – times when demand for electricity is highest. Smart thermostats enrolled in the SmartStat program help you to use less energy by cooling your home ahead of time and tweaking the temperature up to three degrees during peak times.
Members who enroll in the SmartStat program, agree to allow South River EMC to adjust the thermostat setting by three degrees for up to four hours during peak times. There could be up to 16 events from May to October and 16 between November and April. Events generally occur during weekdays, but can occur on weekends in emergency conditions. When possible, you will get advance notification of an event and there will be no more than one event in a day. Members who choose to enroll in the SmartStat program will receive a one-time $50 credit on their electric bill. After being on the program for one year, they will receive a $4 credit on their bill monthly. If you've recently installed a smart thermostat, you could also be eligible for a rebate from the Cooperative.
You always remain in control. If your home gets too hot during these peak times, you can change the temperature setting at any time.
Why Smart Thermostats
Smart thermostats provide convenience, insight and control – all of which add up to energy savings and comfort. Smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences and establish a schedule that adjusts to energy-saving temperatures at night or while you are away. They also enable you to track and manage your energy use. Because they are wi-fi enabled, smart thermostats are accessible from your smart phone/tablet remotely.
