Do you ever wonder how your government works?
If you’re saying yes, and you’re between the ages of 14 and 18, or you have a child between those ages, South River EMC is offering an opportunity to find out.
The Cooperative is sponsoring a student from the South River EMC service area to attend the Youth Legislative Assembly, or YLA, April 8-10, 2022.
The three-day, two-night event takes place in Raleigh, where participating students take part in a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state and national government.
They have the ability to do so by participating on committees, which they are assigned to during their time at the General Assembly. Participants will travel to the General Assembly and participate in the opening ceremony, as well as committee meetings, and general session.
This unique experience allows high school students an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the workings of local, state, and national government. Active participation in YLA increases the students' confidence and ability to debate current issues.
Attire for most programming is dress attire, but casual attire is welcome for evenings, as well as for the dance and games held on the second evening.
High school students (grades 9-12; ages 14-18) in South River EMC's service area are eligible to participate in YLA.
South River EMC will cover the cost of a two-night hotel stay, meals, a t-shirt, snacks, and educational materials. Students are required to stay at the hotel, no matter how close their home proximity, as part of the program is working and interacting with others.
You are not required to have any additional money; however, you may want some if you chose to order delivery, or you want something from the hotel's snack area.
Students will be monitored by chaperones, as well as General Assembly police at the hotel. Chaperones are required to undergo a background check.
