May Is Electric Safety Month, But Safety Is Always Relevant
Consider Practicing These Tips:
Indoors:
- If you find a frayed or damaged electric cord, it is best to replace the cord rather than trying to fix it yourself. No matter what option you choose, never use an appliance while the cord is damaged.
- Standing in water makes a person the perfect conductor for electricity. Never use anything electric when standing in a wet or damp area.
- Touching a faulty appliance plug or bare wire can make you part of the electric circuit.
- Be sure never to use any electric appliances while in the tub or shower- this can be fatal.
- Never insert any metal objects into an appliance such as a toaster, without first disconnecting it.
- Be careful not to overload circuits with high wattage appliances.
- It is a good policy to turn off everything in a room as you leave.
- Extension cord safety is important. Cords intended for indoor use are intended to be used temporarily. Also, keep them away from moisture, heat, or metal pipes and never run them under rugs
- During electrical storms stay out of water and away from trees. Get indoors and stay away from windows. Be sure to turn off and unplug household appliances including the TV.
- Never leave iron cord or heating appliances connected when not in use.
Outdoors:
- If you're planning to do digging or excavating, remember to call area utilities first to make sure you don't hit any buried cables or underground electric lines.
- Keep ladders, antennas and kites away from power lines.
- Use heavy duty wiring with grounded three-pronged plugs for safety when using power tools.
- Keep workshop areas clean and dry. Sparks can ignite scraps, sawdust and solvents.
- Never climb power poles, transmission poles or substation fences.
- Never install antennas within falling distance of power lines. Allow a minimum of 5-10 feet.
- Never build a swimming pool or other structure under power lines.
- Never approach a downed power line. Warn others to stay away and call your electric company.
- Never touch anyone who is in contact with a power source.
