Electric vehicles provide cooperatives, like South River EMC, with an opportunity to build a more robust and resilient grid by using energy during less expensive times and flattening peaks in demand.
Members with EVs can now earn rewards just by doing the majority of their vehicle charging at home during off-peak times, by participating in the EVConnectNC program.
The EVConnectNC program utilizes EV telematics, which is an innovative method to remotely communicate with vehicles to monitor or manage their charging and collect consumption data without a smart charger or second meter. In doing this, it helps members, as well as South River EMC, better use electricity.
What does EVConnectNC require for participation?
- Charging an EV between the times of 7 p.m.- 5 a.m. or 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
- Greater than or at least 90% of charging windows (outlined above) to receive the credit.
- Charge a minimum of 200 kWh a month.
- Only charging at home will be monitored.
- No restrictions on away-from-home charging.

In signing up for the program, you'll receive tips on the best times to charge based on real-time indicators, such as cost, grid stress, and renewable energy availability. Drivers with Teslas, or a ChargePoint or Wallbox home charging station can opt to have their charging automated with hassle-free Automatic smart charging.
South River EMC has partnered with WeaveGrid to manage EVConnectNC.
Click the green button to set up an account and WeaveGrid will connect directly to your car or charger's app.
Currently, there are more than 100,000 EVs in North Carolina, with a state goal of 1.25 million by 2030, according to the Department of Transportation.
