Switch and Save (TOU)

Switch & Save logo

Make the switch from our standard residential rate to our time-of-use rate and save energy and money. Plus, get a $20 bill credit! How does it work? You must make tough decisions to move most of your energy use to off-peak hours.

Why? Energy used during peak hours is charged at a very steep rate, but energy used during off-peak times is a bargain. Even better, energy use shifted to the super off-peak time is a real steal!

Although you can save a significant amount of money, you must make a true effort to shift your energy use to off-peak hours to be successful. On-peak times are Monday through Friday, except federal holidays.

What Is A Time-of-Use Rate?

Time-of-use is a rate that offers very attractive energy costs to incentivize use of electricity during off-peak times. Conversely, energy used during on-peak times is more. This pricing structure encourages the most efficient use of the electric system while reducing overall costs to both the member and the Cooperative. The residential super TOU rate, is what most members will want to consider.

Are The On-Peak Times Daily?

On-peak times are Monday through Friday and exclude major holidays. This is subject to change, but we would notify you before such a change takes place.

Could I Benefit From A Time-of-Use Rate?

Every household is different and every member has to decide what works for their unique situation. Generally, time-of-use rates work best for people who are gone during the day and are flexible with when they use the most energy. This rate is generally not suited for retirees or families who have someone home all day. The super off-peak time is perfect for electric-vehicle charging.

How Can The Cooperative Offer Such Low Off-Peak And Super Off-Peak Pricing?

During certain times of the day there is greater demand for electricity. These times tend to be during cold mornings when everyone is turning up their heat and taking extra-long hot showers and hot afternoons when people return home and want their air conditioner to work extra hard while they prepare dinner. These “peak” times are when the Cooperative pays the most for the electricity it generates and purchases. Energy supplies are plentiful overnight when demand is the lowest, so this is the best time to use energy. The less energy used “on-peak”, the lower the costs are to the Cooperative and this benefits all members through rates.

How Can I Shift My Energy Use?

Some recommendations for success:

  • Install a timer on your water heater to ensure it doesn’t run during on-peak times.

  • During the winter lower your thermostat a few degrees, raise it a few degrees during the summer.

  • Pre-heating and pre-cooling before on-peak times can help.

  • Install a smart thermostat to help with thermostat scheduling and control.

  • Set pool pump timers to the off position during peak times.

  • Move all unnecessary activities (i.e. laundry, cooking, running the dishwasher, etc.) to off-peak times.

  • Install occupancy sensors on lights in your home. Use as few lights as possible during on-peak times.

What If I Change My Mind And Want To Change Back To A Traditional Rate?

If you make the necessary behavioral changes, you will be so happy with your electric bill that you won’t want to change back! However, there is a 12-month commitment once you enroll in this rate. If you change your mind and want to switch back prior to the end of the 12-month period, the enrollment incentive will be removed.
