Do you have a child who asks you about the government and how it works? Or maybe they just have an interest in the government? If you’re saying yes, and that student is between the ages of 14 and 18, South River EMC is offering an opportunity to find out.
The Cooperative is sponsoring a student from the South River EMC service area to attend the Youth Legislative Assembly, or YLA, April 8-10. The three-day, two-night event takes place in Raleigh, where participating students take part in a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state and national government.
They have the ability to do so by participating on committees, which they are assigned to during their time at the General Assembly. Participants will travel to the General Assembly and participate in the opening ceremony, as well as committee meetings, and general session.
This unique experience allows high school students an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the workings of local, state, and national government. Active participation in YLA increases the students' confidence and ability to debate current issues. High school students (grades 9-12; ages 14-18) in South River EMC's service area are eligible to participate in YLA.
South River EMC will cover the cost of a two-night hotel stay, meals, a t-shirt, snacks, and educational materials. Students are required to stay at the hotel, no matter how close their home proximity, as part of the program is working and interacting with others.
If interested, students can learn more or apply online at sremc.com/YLA. The deadline to apply is February 15.
South River EMC is a locally owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 46,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
